Nawazuddin Siddiqui recalls becoming Kamal Haasan’s acting coach for Abhay; says, “I was jobless at the time, so I agreed”

Acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently revealed a fascinating anecdote from his early days in the industry. In a candid interview with Filmfare, Siddiqui spoke about his experience working with the legendary Kamal Haasan, not as a fellow actor, but as his dialogue coach.

When Nawazuddin Siddiqui Turned Into Kamal Haasan’s Dialogue Coach  Siddiqui, a self-proclaimed admirer of Haasan, described their collaboration on the 2001 film Abhay (released as Aalavandhan in Tamil). He landed the role thanks to a senior from the National School of Drama (NSD) who connected him with the project. "I was jobless at the time," Siddiqui admitted, "so I agreed." His role involved ensuring Haasan's Hindi dialogue delivery was accurate. When Kamal Haasan Gave A Task To Nawazuddin Siddiqui Beyond his assigned duties, Siddiqui actively sought opportunities to learn from Haasan. He recalled performing a monologue from the play Tughlaq for the veteran actor. Deeply impressed, Haasan challenged Siddiqui to deliver the same speech in 10 distinct ways. This, Siddiqui confessed, proved to be a humbling experience. "No! How could I do it in 10 different ways?" he said. "I was lost. I could do it in three, maybe four..." Haasan's background as a trained dancer, according to Siddiqui, granted him an exceptional level of physical control, allowing him to effortlessly perform the monologue in various styles. Nawazuddin Siddiqui Recalls Sharing Screen Space With Kamal Haasan Siddiqui also revealed that he had a scene filmed for Haasan's historical epic Hey Ram, but it was ultimately cut from the final release. Despite this, the experience clearly left a mark on Siddiqui. He continues to hold Haasan in high regard, even acknowledging the recent underperformance of Haasan's film Indian 2 at the box office.
